ROCKFORD, IL – Residents across northern Illinois are being urged to protect sensitive plants Friday, October 16, as temperatures are expected to plunge near or slightly below freezing overnight. Freeze warnings and frost advisories have been issued for portions of the region, with the coldest conditions expected early Saturday morning.
According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, the greatest freeze threat is concentrated across interior northern Illinois, particularly near and west of the Fox Valley and north of Interstate 80.
Communities around Rockford, DeKalb and Dixon are among the areas facing the coldest temperatures, while nearby locations could experience frost.
Overnight temperatures are expected to fall into the low to middle 30s , with some locations dropping to or slightly below the 32 degree freezing mark.
The greatest concern extends from late Friday night through early Saturday morning, October 17.
The National Weather Service has issued Freeze Warnings for the coldest areas and Frost Advisories for surrounding communities.
Temperatures in Chicago and communities immediately along Lake Michigan are expected to remain milder, generally in the lower 40s, reducing the threat of freezing conditions near the lakeshore.
Friday will bring scattered showers and breezy conditions, with afternoon highs between 50 and 55 degrees. Most showers should end by sunset, although lake effect showers could continue into Friday night across northwest Indiana.
Residents with gardens, flowers or other cold sensitive vegetation should cover vulnerable plants or bring them indoors before temperatures fall.
Another round of patchy frost is possible early Sunday morning , particularly across inland areas.
The cold weather is expected to be brief.
Saturday afternoon temperatures should rebound into the upper 50s, followed by highs between 62 and 68 degrees Sunday.
A stronger warming trend begins Monday, with highs reaching 67 to 72 degrees. By Tuesday, temperatures could climb into the 70s.
Residents should check weather.gov/chicago for updated forecasts and specific warning boundaries.
