Plainfield, IL – Residents in Plainfield and surrounding Will County communities can safely dispose of many expired, unwanted or unused medications during a four hour drug take back event Saturday, Oct. 24, 2026.
According to the Plainfield Police Department , the department will serve as a collection site from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. as part of the Drug Enforcement Administration’s nationwide prescription drug take back effort.
The event is intended for patients and their families who want to remove potentially dangerous medications from their homes and have them safely destroyed by law enforcement.
Police said controlled substances, non controlled medications and over the counter products will be accepted. Solid medications such as tablets and capsules may be brought in consumer containers.
Small, pint sized bottles of cough syrup may also be accepted if they remain sealed in their original containers. Officials ask residents to make sure caps are tightly secured to prevent leaks.
Several items will not be accepted.
Police said illicit substances such as marijuana or heroin are not part of the program, and needles will not be accepted . Pharmacies, hospitals and physicians also cannot use the event to dispose of excess medications.
The DEA coordinates the national event with state and local law enforcement agencies to provide residents with a secure way to clear unwanted medications from homes while drawing attention to prescription drug misuse and safe disposal.

Residents should review the accepted item rules in advance, particularly if they plan to bring liquids or medical supplies.
