Peoria, IL – Peoria police are investigating a homicide Tuesday after a woman was shot and found critically injured inside a vehicle that crashed into a building Monday afternoon.
According to the Peoria Police Department , officers were dispatched to the 600 block of South Western Avenue at approximately 1:18 p.m. Monday following a report of shots fired. While officers were responding, they learned a vehicle had crashed into City Market in the same block and that a possible shooting victim was inside.
Responding officers found an adult woman inside the vehicle suffering from at least one gunshot wound, police said. She was transported to a local hospital in critical condition but was pronounced dead a short time later.
The woman's identity was not immediately released. Police said the Peoria County coroner will release her identity and official cause of death.
Investigators later located what police described as the initial crime scene in the 1900 block of West Antoinette Street. Authorities did not release additional details about what investigators found there or the circumstances leading up to the shooting and subsequent crash.
Members of the department's Patrol Unit, Criminal Investigations Division and Crime Scene Unit are investigating.
As of the department's latest update, police said no suspect information was available.
