Peoria, IL – A 16 year old boy wanted in an unrelated aggravated battery case was arrested Saturday after Peoria police allegedly found a stolen handgun on him before he fled from officers.
According to the Peoria Police Department , officers were patrolling near Indiana and Nebraska avenues at approximately 5:42 p.m. Saturday when they spotted six juvenile males walking in the roadway instead of using the nearby sidewalk.
Officers contacted the group and determined that one of the juveniles, a 16 year old boy, was wanted for aggravated battery in a separate Peoria police investigation.
During a search, officers allegedly recovered a handgun from the teen. Police said the firearm had previously been reported stolen.
Authorities said officers attempted to take the teen into custody, but he allegedly fled on foot. Officers pursued him and quickly apprehended him, according to the department.
Police arrested the teen on allegations of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, possession of a stolen firearm, resisting police, having no Firearm Owner's Identification card and aggravated battery.
The teen was transported to the Juvenile Detention Center. Police said the other juveniles who had been stopped were released at the scene.
Authorities did not release the teen's identity because of his age. The charges are allegations, and the juvenile is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
