Oak Brook, IL – A midday shooting outside the L.L.Bean store at Oakbrook Center left one man dead and a woman wounded Wednesday, prompting a large police investigation at the DuPage County shopping mall in Chicago’s western suburbs.
According to Oak Brook police, officers responded to the shopping center at approximately 12:01 p.m. Wednesday after receiving a report of shots fired. When officers arrived, they found a deceased man and a wounded woman outside the store.
Officers secured the area while fire department personnel responded. The woman was transported to a hospital for treatment. Her condition was not immediately released.
DuPage County MERIT investigators and forensic personnel also responded to assist with the investigation.
Police said preliminary information indicates two vehicles carrying a total of five people met in the parking lot before an altercation occurred and shots were fired. One of the vehicles remained at Oakbrook Center, while the second vehicle left the area.
Authorities later located that vehicle nearby, and individuals associated with it were taken into custody, according to police. Officials have not released additional information about those detained, and no further details surrounding what led to the altercation were immediately available.
Police also highlighted the use of a Flock license plate reader network during the response. Investigators said information from the system helped officers quickly identify individuals connected to the incident as information became available in real time.
Authorities have not released the identities of the deceased man or wounded woman. Additional information is expected as investigators continue reviewing evidence and circumstances surrounding the shooting.
