Oak Brook, IL – A Chicago woman accused of helping orchestrate an armed robbery that ended in a fatal shooting outside Oakbrook Center will remain in custody after a DuPage County judge denied her pretrial release Tuesday, Oct. 13.
According to DuPage County State's Attorney Robert Berlin and Oak Brook Police Chief Brian Strockis, Judge Joshua Dieden granted prosecutors' request to detain Chance Jamerson, 29, of Chicago, who faces three counts of attempted armed robbery, a Class 1 felony.
Fatal Shooting Outside Oakbrook Center
The charges stem from a Sept. 30, 2026, shooting shortly after noon in the shopping mall's parking lot.
Police responding to reports of gunfire discovered Justin Hill suffering from a gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Jamerson was also wounded and transported to a hospital for treatment.
Prosecutors Describe Alleged Robbery Plot
Authorities allege Jamerson coordinated with Hill to rob occupants of a black Mercedes who had arranged to purchase four luxury Swatch watches valued at approximately $448 each, plus tax.
Investigators allege Jamerson communicated information about the victims' vehicle and instructed Hill to block the Mercedes before the attempted robbery.
During the confrontation, prosecutors say Hill allegedly approached the vehicle with a firearm and struggled with its driver.
The driver reportedly gained control of the weapon and fired, striking Hill and Jamerson.
Prosecutors said the driver will not face charges in connection with the shooting, citing Illinois law permitting deadly force to prevent a forcible felony.
Woman Remains in Custody
Following the investigation, authorities charged Jamerson with three counts of attempted armed robbery.
Berlin emphasized the dangers associated with violent crime, particularly when firearms are involved.
Jamerson's next court appearance is scheduled for Friday, Oct. 23, before Judge Brian Telander.
The charges are allegations, and Jamerson is presumed innocent unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
