NORMAL, IL – A report of a man on a bicycle allegedly pointing what appeared to be a weapon toward students prompted a police response Sunday night near Illinois State University, ending with an arrest and confirmation that the object was actually a toy bubble blaster.
According to the Illinois State University Police Department , Normal police received the report at approximately 9 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 1. Officers quickly responded, located the individual and investigated the reported threat.
Authorities determined that the object initially believed to be a possible weapon was a toy bubble blaster, not a firearm.
Normal police subsequently arrested the individual. Officials did not immediately release the person's identity or specify what charges, if any, were filed.
The incident raised campus safety concerns in Normal, a McLean County community in the Bloomington Normal metropolitan area and home to Illinois State University.
In an official community update issued at 11 p.m. Sunday, university police emphasized that officers take all reports of potential threats seriously and must investigate and verify information before determining whether an immediate danger exists.
The department also explained that an ISU Emergency Alert is issued when an immediate threat to the campus community has been confirmed.
University officials urged students and residents to avoid spreading unverified information on social media, warning that speculation can create unnecessary fear and confusion.
Police did not identify the exact location of the encounter or indicate whether any students were physically harmed.
The department thanked Normal police for their prompt response and continued cooperation in protecting the university community.
Students and residents who witness suspicious activity are encouraged to contact 911 for emergencies or call 309 438 8631 for nonemergency safety concerns.
Additional details about the arrest and any potential charges were not available in the university's initial statement.
