New Lenox, IL – A 49 year old New Lenox man was arrested after a domestic battery investigation escalated into a police response involving the South Suburban Emergency Response Team, authorities announced Monday.
According to the New Lenox Police Department , officers were dispatched to the 2300 block of Alta Vista Drive around 6:26 p.m. Sunday for a domestic battery complaint. Police said a witness reported hearing children crying and seeing a woman bleeding.
Officers met with the woman, who reported that she had been arguing with a family member identified by police as Nickolas R. Svehla.
As the argument escalated, Svehla allegedly threw an object at the woman, knocking her to the ground and causing minor injuries, police said. The woman also told officers that firearms were inside the home.
Authorities said Svehla allegedly refused to cooperate, threatened violence toward police officers and stopped communicating while remaining inside the residence.
Those circumstances created significant safety concerns, prompting the South Suburban Emergency Response Team to assist New Lenox police, according to the department.
Police said officers made contact with Svehla Monday and safely took him into custody.
Svehla faces allegations of domestic battery, endangering the life or health of a child and obstructing a police officer. He was transferred to the Will County Adult Detention Facility.
Police did not provide additional information about the children or indicate whether they suffered injuries.
The charges are allegations, and Svehla is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
