CRETE MONEE, IL — A threatening online statement referencing an AR style firearm and Tuesday morning prompted an overnight police investigation, heightened security at Crete Monee High School and the arrest of a juvenile student, authorities announced Tuesday.
According to a joint statement from Crete Monee School District 201 U and local police, concerns emerged after an online post circulated containing a conversation between several anonymous individuals. One participant allegedly wrote, "Putting my AR to work...Tuesday morning."
The statement alarmed parents and community members, with several families publicly discussing whether to keep their children home from school Tuesday because of potential safety concerns.
Police said an on duty sergeant immediately notified high school administrators and the police chief after learning about the post, triggering an investigation into the potential threat.
Officers, detectives and the school resource officer worked overnight to identify the individual responsible.
As a precaution, police and school officials developed a coordinated safety plan for Tuesday, including an increased police presence and additional school safety protocols.
Authorities announced Tuesday morning that officers located the individual at the student's residence and identified the person as a juvenile attending Crete Monee High School.
The student was arrested on a felony disorderly conduct allegation.
During a search of the juvenile's room, investigators reported finding no firearms or immediate access to weapons.
Police said the available information indicated the incident involved a verbal threat rather than evidence of an imminent armed attack.
However, officials emphasized that threats involving schools are treated seriously because of the disruption and fear they create for students, families, employees and the surrounding community.
The joint statement highlighted the cooperation between school administrators and law enforcement in responding to the situation.
Superintendent Dr. Kara Coglianese and Police Chief Scott S. Pieritz thanked the community for its support as officials worked to address the safety concerns.
