Momence, IL – A former Johnsonville Foods manufacturing plant once targeted for demolition is getting a new life, with a Chicago area bakery planning to bring about 300 jobs to Momence.
According to Economic Alliance of Kankakee County President and CEO Angela Morrey, Mighty Cake Co. plans to establish operations at the former Johnsonville facility at 334 North St. on the city’s north side.
Morrey said last week that approximately 300 new jobs are expected as part of the company’s expansion into Momence. The wholesale bakery specializes in handmade croissants for retail, food service and private label customers.
The nearly 12 acre property was recently purchased for $2.5 million, according to Kankakee County property records. The new owner is expected to invest millions of additional dollars into renovations and equipment needed to convert the former meat processing facility into a bakery production site.
Mighty Cake Co. plans to have the Momence operation running by December or January, Morrey said.
The move marks a significant turnaround for the property following Johnsonville Foods’ abrupt closure in mid 2025. The site had previously been considered for demolition before the bakery stepped in with plans to reuse the existing facility.
Mighty Cake Co. describes itself as a family owned bakery manufacturer serving food service and retail customers across the United States. The company produces several types of croissants, including kosher certified, whole wheat and sliced varieties designed for sandwiches.
The company also says its manufacturing operations use modern ovens, packaging lines and lamination systems while maintaining food safety standards and certification requirements.
The investment gives the former Johnsonville property another industrial use while potentially adding hundreds of new employment opportunities in Momence and the surrounding Kankakee County area.
