Mokena, IL – Residents across Mokena may hear outdoor warning sirens activate Monday, but police are advising the community that the sounds are part of scheduled inspections and do not indicate an emergency.
According to the Mokena Police Department , Braniff Communications will conduct routine inspections of all outdoor warning sirens throughout the Will County community Monday, Oct. 5, from approximately 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
During the six hour inspection window, residents may hear brief activations at individual siren locations. Police said some tests could include approximately 10 second “burps” as crews check whether each warning system is functioning properly.
The testing differs from a prolonged outdoor warning siren activation residents could hear during an actual emergency.
If technicians identify problems during Monday’s inspections, Braniff Communications may perform maintenance on individual sirens as needed, according to police.
The work is part of Mokena’s scheduled annual inspection process and is intended to ensure the village’s outdoor warning system remains operational when needed.
Residents do not need to take emergency action solely because of the brief siren sounds associated with the scheduled testing.
The inspection window covers much of the workday, meaning the short activations could occur at different times depending on where crews are working. Not every siren is expected to activate simultaneously.
Police thanked residents for their understanding while crews inspect the warning system and emphasized that Monday’s brief activations are planned.
