Mokena, IL – Residents in Mokena and surrounding Will County communities can dispose of sensitive documents for free Saturday during a two hour shredding event and food drive at the Mokena Front Street Metra lot, southwest of Chicago.
According to a Village of Mokena event flyer , the free shred event is scheduled from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday and will continue until the shredding truck is full. Participants are limited to two boxes per vehicle .
Organizers ask residents to place documents in boxes or paper bags rather than plastic bags. Boxes should be placed in the trunk or back seat for removal, and the containers will be returned to the vehicle after the documents are collected.
Several materials will not be accepted for shredding, including CDs, DVDs, Blu ray discs, plastic materials, metal, trash, three ring binders, batteries, medical waste, hardcover books, diskettes, magnetic media and hazardous waste.
The event will also serve as a collection point for several community organizations. The flyer says the Mokena Lions Club will collect eyeglasses, while Mokena VFW 725 will accept American flags. Food donations will benefit the Frankfort Township Food Pantry .
Requested pantry items include canned food, peanut butter and jelly, pasta products, rice, cereal and snack items, cleaning supplies, toiletries, baby diapers and wipes, paper products and other household necessities.
The flyer lists State Rep. Patrick Sheehan, Will County Board member Jim Richmond and Mokena Mayor George Metanias as co hosts of the event.
Residents planning to participate may want to arrive early because shredding is available only during the scheduled window or until the truck reaches capacity.
