McHenry, IL – A 23 year old man from the Lake Villa area was killed early Thursday, October 15, after his Audi reportedly accelerated, left a roadway and slammed into several trees near the Lake McHenry county line, leaving the vehicle torn into multiple pieces.
According to the Lake County Sheriff 's Office, deputies responded at approximately 1:35 a.m. to the intersection of West Dowell Road and West Neville Road in unincorporated McHenry, on the Lake County side of the county line.
Deputies discovered an Audi S4 that had crashed into trees approximately 200 feet from the roadway.
The driver, a 23 year old resident of unincorporated Lake Villa, was found critically injured after being ejected from the vehicle.
A preliminary investigation revealed that a McHenry County sheriff's deputy had clocked the Audi traveling 74 mph in a posted 35 mph zone shortly before the crash.
Investigators say the Audi was traveling eastbound on Dowell Road and approaching Neville Road when the deputy attempted to turn around.
At that point, authorities believe the driver accelerated and lost control of the vehicle.
The Audi subsequently left the roadway, struck several trees and broke into multiple pieces.
Emergency responders transported the critically injured driver to an area hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
The Lake County Coroner's Office responded to the hospital and is scheduling an autopsy to determine the official cause of death.
Authorities have not publicly identified the driver in the initial release.
The circumstances surrounding the crash remain under investigation by the Lake County Sheriff's Office Technical Crash Investigations Team.
Officials have not announced additional findings regarding the driver's actions or any other potential contributing factors.
The fatal collision occurred in the overnight hours near the boundary separating Lake and McHenry counties in Chicago's northern suburban region.
