Lombard, IL – A late night apartment fire in Lombard turned deadly Friday after firefighters pulled a resident from a burning unit and rushed the person to paramedics.
According to the Lombard Fire Department , crews were dispatched to St. Regis Drive at approximately 9:52 p.m. Friday for a reported fire in a multi family residential building. While firefighters were responding, dispatchers reported smoke coming from an apartment and advised that a resident was believed to be inside.
The first Lombard crew arrived at approximately 9:55 p.m. and confirmed a fire inside the unit. Firefighters began battling the flames while simultaneously searching for the resident.
The resident was located, removed from the apartment and transferred to waiting paramedics. The person was taken to Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in critical condition and was later pronounced dead, according to the department.
Firefighters also evacuated and searched neighboring apartments. The blaze was fully extinguished by approximately 10:20 p.m. and remained contained to the unit where it started. One additional resident was displaced.
The cause remains under investigation by the Lombard Fire Investigation Unit, DuPage County Fire Investigator's Task Force and Office of the Illinois State Fire Marshal. Lombard police are conducting a death investigation with assistance from the DuPage County Metropolitan Emergency Response and Investigation Team's Forensic Investigations Unit.
Fire departments from Villa Park, Elmhurst, Oak Brook, Oakbrook Terrace, Wheaton and York Center assisted Lombard crews. Lombard police provided traffic and crowd control.
Officials have not released the deceased resident's identity or announced what caused the fire.
