LOMBARD, IL – As Fire Prevention Week draws attention to fire safety across Illinois, the Lombard Historical Society is sharing the fascinating history behind one of firefighting's most recognizable symbols: the Dalmatian.
According to the Lombard Historical Society, Dalmatians became associated with firefighters long before modern fire engines existed, serving an important role during the era of horse drawn firefighting equipment.
Before motorized fire trucks, firefighters relied on horses to pull heavy equipment through crowded streets. Dalmatians were especially suited for accompanying these teams because of their athletic ability, stamina and natural connection with horses.
The dogs often ran alongside horse drawn fire engines, helping clear a path as firefighters rushed toward emergencies.
Their responsibilities extended beyond the streets.
At fire scenes, Dalmatians frequently remained near the horses, providing reassurance amid loud noises, confusion and intense activity.
They also served as companions and watchdogs at firehouse stables, becoming familiar fixtures in fire departments.
When motorized fire engines began replacing horse drawn equipment during the early 1900s, the practical need for Dalmatians gradually disappeared.
However, many firehouses continued keeping the dogs as mascots and companions, preserving a tradition that had developed over generations.
The breed's connection to firefighting grew even stronger during the 1950s and 1960s, when the popularity of 101 Dalmatians , first published in 1956 and adapted into a Disney film in 1961, brought additional attention to the spotted dogs.
The Lombard Historical Society also highlighted a historic photograph of Spanner, a firehouse Dalmatian reportedly capable of recognizing the difference between a fire alarm and a medical alarm.
The photograph was shared without a date.
Today, Dalmatians remain enduring symbols of firefighting history, representing loyalty, bravery and the close relationships between firefighters and their four legged companions.
The historical society's post offers Illinois residents a look at a tradition that continues to connect modern fire departments with their past.
