Lincoln, IL – Central Illinois residents should prepare for potentially strong to severe thunderstorms Tuesday night, October 13, into early Wednesday, October 14, with damaging wind gusts reaching 60 mph possible in some communities.
According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, a Level 1 out of 5 severe weather risk remains in place, primarily for areas west of Interstate 57. The greatest threat is expected between 8 p.m. Tuesday and 3 a.m. Wednesday, with severe storms most likely after 8 p.m. and continuing past midnight.
Damaging Winds and Hail Possible Overnight
Isolated damaging wind gusts are the primary concern, with some storms potentially producing winds up to 60 mph.
A few thunderstorms northwest of the Illinois River could also produce hail up to quarter size. Forecasters indicate tornadoes are not likely with this weather system.
Communities near Peoria, Galesburg, Macomb, Jacksonville and Springfield should remain alert as thunderstorms develop across the region.
The National Weather Service recommends keeping multiple ways to receive weather warnings overnight, especially while sleeping, and being prepared to seek indoor shelter when strong storms approach.
Rain and Thunderstorms Continue Through Thursday
A frontal boundary is expected to become nearly stationary across central Illinois Tuesday, creating opportunities for additional showers and thunderstorms through Thursday night, October 15.
Wednesday and Wednesday evening may provide the longest break from rainfall in areas north of Interstate 72.
Meanwhile, unseasonably warm temperatures will continue Tuesday, with afternoon highs reaching the 80s across much of central Illinois and potentially the lower 90s south of Interstate 72.
Sharp Cooldown Arrives Friday, October 16
By Friday, temperatures are expected to drop significantly, with afternoon highs generally reaching the upper 50s and lower 60s.
The change could bring a noticeable return to fall like conditions after several days of unusually warm weather.
Residents should monitor updated forecasts and any warnings issued overnight as storm intensity and locations become clearer.
