KANKAKEE Riverside President and CEO Phil Kambic issued a warning to nurses in a letter Tuesday after claims a Union had 'targeted' nurses at Riverside for organization. In a two page letter, Kambic argued that unionizing would create a barrier between the hospital's leadership and its staff, potentially distracting from the organization's mission.
Kambic noted in the letter that union representatives have been actively contacting nursing staff. He emphasized that, in his view, a direct relationship between administration and staff is the most effective way to address concerns and improve working conditions.
“I am concerned that a third party would distract us from our mission,” Kambic wrote. “We have always prided ourselves on our ability to work directly with our employees to resolve issues and make improvements.”
Hospital perspective The letter highlights concerns regarding the impact a union might have on the flexibility and collaborative culture of the healthcare system. Kambic pointed to recent efforts by the hospital to support nurses during the pandemic, including pay increases and additional resources, as evidence that the administration is responsive to staff needs.
