Kankakee, IL – Kankakee residents are invited to gather Friday morning for a September 11 flag ceremony marking the 25th anniversary of the 2001 terrorist attacks and honoring those who lost their lives.
According to the City of Kankakee, the public ceremony will begin at 8 a.m. Friday at the Public Safety Building, 385 E. Oak St. Officials are encouraging attendees to arrive early.
The flag raising is scheduled for 8:03 a.m., shortly after the ceremony begins.
Friday marks 25 years since the September 11, 2001, attacks, when nearly 3,000 people were killed in coordinated terrorist attacks in New York City, at the Pentagon in Virginia and aboard United Airlines Flight 93, which crashed near Shanksville, Pennsylvania.
The Kankakee ceremony will provide residents from the city, Kankakee County and the broader Chicago area region an opportunity to remember the victims and reflect on the lasting impact of the attacks.
City officials said the community is welcome to attend and come together to "remember, honor and reflect."
The morning timing coincides closely with the timeline of the attacks. American Airlines Flight 11 struck the World Trade Center& 39;s North Tower at 8:46 a.m. Eastern time, followed by United Airlines Flight 175 striking the South Tower at 9:03 a.m.
Those planning to attend Friday& 39;s event should allow additional time to arrive and gather before the 8 a.m. start. The ceremony is open to the public, according to the city.
