Kankakee, IL – Kankakee County residents struggling with heating or utility costs can apply for home energy assistance during weekly Friday sessions in Kankakee, giving eligible households another local option for accessing help ahead of winter.
According to information shared by the Kankakee County State's Attorney's Office, the Will County Center for Community Concerns is providing LIHEAP application assistance at the State's Attorney's Community Division Office, 135 N. Schuyler Ave. Sessions are scheduled every Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., excluding holidays.
The partnership is expected to continue into November. Staff from the Will County Center for Community Concerns will be available to assist residents with applications and answer eligibility questions.
The Home Energy Assistance Program provides utility and furnace assistance to income eligible households. Applications opened Oct. 1 for seniors age 60 and older, people with disabilities, households with children age 5 or younger, and households facing disconnection or imminent disconnection.
Furnace assistance also became available Oct. 1 for eligible homeowners with a non operational heating system or one red tagged by a utility company.
Beginning Nov. 2, applications will open to all income eligible households. Utility assistance is scheduled to remain available through Aug. 13, 2027, or until funding is exhausted.
Applicants should bring required documentation, including identification, household income information and recent gas and electric bills. Additional documentation may be required depending on the household.
