Kankakee, IL – Local restaurants, specialty shops and small businesses across Kankakee County have a new opportunity to gain statewide attention as applications officially open Monday, Nov. 2, for the 2027 Illinois Made program.
According to the Illinois Office of Tourism, the program is expanding its eligibility requirements, allowing more businesses to qualify for recognition and potential promotional opportunities throughout Illinois.
Previously focused on traditional artisans and businesses producing physical products, Illinois Made now welcomes businesses offering distinctive experiences that encourage visitors to explore local communities.
Eligible businesses may include restaurants with signature dishes, farmers, artists, specialty retailers, craft producers and businesses offering tours, tastings, workshops or other memorable experiences.
Businesses must maintain a physical presence in Illinois, offer meaningful visitor experiences and demonstrate a compelling connection to the state's culture, craftsmanship or communities.
Selected businesses, known as Illinois Makers, receive recognition through the state's tourism program and are featured on EnjoyIllinois.com.
Additional opportunities may include statewide marketing campaigns, social media promotion, travel features and media coverage.
Visit Kankakee County is encouraging local businesses, chambers of commerce, municipal partners and community organizations to help spread awareness of the opportunity.
The expanded program could provide additional exposure for businesses throughout Kankakee County and the greater Kankakee area, particularly those offering experiences that attract visitors from outside the community.
Applications are open now through Thursday, Dec. 31, 2026.
The Illinois Office of Tourism and its agency partners will review submissions based on program criteria, with the next class of Illinois Makers expected to be announced in March 2027.
Businesses interested in applying should clearly explain their unique offerings, Illinois connections and what makes their experience worth visiting.
