Crowd gatherers at a Black Lives Matter rally and march in downtown Kankakee Where’s the permit for taking our lives? Who gave you permission to your knee on our neck for nine minutes? Who gave you auth to snatch our breath from our lungs? We are tired of asking for the bare minimum: to be treated as human beings.
These were the emotions felt by residents who gathered in downtown Kankakee on Friday afternoon to march in support of the Black Lives Matter movement and in protest of the death of George Floyd.
The rally, which began at the Kankakee County Courthouse, drew hundreds of people who marched down Schuyler Avenue to the Paramount Theatre. Protesters carried signs, chanted, and called for an end to police brutality and systemic racism.
Organizers emphasized the importance of peaceful protest and the need for unity in the fight for justice. Many attendees expressed that the march was not just about George Floyd, but about all those who have lost their lives to violence and inequality.
The event concluded with a moment of silence and a call to action for the community to continue advocating for change.
