Joliet, IL – Visitors exploring one of Will County's historic industrial landmarks can now experience its past in a new way, thanks to a recently launched smartphone audio tour at the Joliet Iron Works Historic Site.
According to the Forest Preserve District of Will County, the self guided experience features 12 stops along the site's interpretive trail, allowing visitors to discover how the former iron manufacturing plant helped shape Joliet's industrial history.
The tour uses the Open Audio Tours app , available through the Apple App Store and Google Play. Visitors can download it beforehand or scan QR codes posted at either end of the trail.
The 1.25 mile round trip experience takes approximately 30 minutes to one hour , depending on how much time visitors spend exploring the ruins and historical photographs.
The app automatically plays narration when visitors reach designated locations, providing details about the site's operations during the late 1800s and early 1900s.
Dozens of historical photographs are also included, helping visitors compare the former industrial complex with the concrete ruins remaining today.
"The audio tour adds another fun, flexible way to experience Joliet Iron Works," said Jen Guest, a Forest Preserve facility supervisor.
"Visitors can stop by any time of year, from sunrise to sunset, and explore the site at their own pace while learning about its history."
The experience also allows people to explore the site's history remotely. Users can search for Joliet Iron Works within the app and access narration and photographs without physically visiting.
Forest Preserve officials say the project is a pilot program that could lead to additional audio tours at other Will County preserves.
For families, history enthusiasts and visitors throughout the Joliet area, the new tour offers another way to discover the region's industrial heritage.
The historic site is accessible from sunrise to sunset throughout the year.
