Joliet, IL – Drivers traveling westbound Interstate 80 through Joliet and Will County should prepare for an overnight lane reduction and temporary full traffic stops beginning Monday night, with restrictions lasting into Tuesday morning.
According to the Illinois Department of Transportation, westbound I 80 will be reduced to one lane beginning at 9 p.m. Monday, Sept. 14, between Chicago Street, which carries U.S. 52 and Illinois 53, and Larkin Avenue.
The overnight restrictions are necessary while crews install new overhead signs as part of ongoing work along the I 80 corridor.
The most significant traffic impacts are expected after 1 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 15. IDOT said drivers should anticipate brief full traffic stops lasting up to 15 minutes at a time while the work is underway.
All westbound lanes are expected to reopen by 5 a.m. Tuesday, according to transportation officials.
The affected section of I 80 runs through Joliet, a major transportation hub southwest of Chicago. Even though the work is scheduled during overnight hours, motorists traveling through Will County could encounter backups when traffic is temporarily stopped.
Drivers heading through the construction zone should allow additional travel time, reduce speeds and remain prepared for changing traffic conditions. Those with time sensitive overnight trips may want to plan around the scheduled restrictions.
IDOT urged motorists to use caution while traveling through the work zone and watch for workers, equipment and temporary traffic controls.
The schedule could be affected by weather or other construction conditions.
