Joliet, IL – Drivers traveling Interstate 80 through Will County should prepare for overnight lane closures, temporary traffic stops and a major westbound traffic change beginning this weekend as construction continues near Joliet.
According to the Illinois Department of Transportation, overnight restrictions are scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 31, and Sunday, Nov. 1, ahead of a new traffic configuration taking effect Monday, Nov. 2.
The changes will affect westbound I 80 between Center Street and Houbolt Road, a heavily traveled stretch connecting Joliet, Rockdale and surrounding communities in the southwest Chicago metropolitan area.
Beginning Monday, westbound traffic will split into two separate lanes after Center Street while crews work to construct the interstate's center lanes.
Two westbound lanes will remain open, but drivers must choose their lanes carefully.
Motorists planning to exit at Larkin Avenue must stay in the right lane at the split. Drivers continuing west toward Houbolt Road should use the left lane.
The separated lanes will merge again before Houbolt Road.
Before the new configuration begins, crews will conduct overnight lane closures and brief traffic stops Saturday and Sunday.
The Larkin Avenue ramps will also temporarily close Sunday night as workers prepare the roadway.
Transportation officials expect the new westbound pattern to remain in place for approximately one month.
The changes are part of the ongoing I 80 reconstruction project, which aims to rebuild and improve the interstate corridor through Will County.
Drivers traveling through Joliet this weekend and during the Monday morning commute should watch for construction signs, select the appropriate lane early and allow additional travel time.
IDOT encourages motorists to plan ahead as traffic adjusts to the temporary configuration.
Updates on construction and traffic conditions are available through IDOT and the I 80 Will project.
