Joliet, Illinois – Joliet police are conducting an active investigation into the death of a 40 year old man discovered in an apartment on the 600 block of Jerome Avenue on Wednesday, September 9, 2026. Authorities were called to the scene at 6:15 p.m. for a welfare check after the tenant was found unresponsive by his roommate. Responding officers arrived to find the man with a significant injury to his head.
According to the Joliet Police Department , detectives arrived at the scene and initiated a preliminary investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death. Investigators determined the victim had left his residence shortly after 6:45 a.m. on September 9, 2026, and began walking toward Cass Street. Evidence indicates that the man was struck by a vehicle while on the road.
The investigation revealed that after being struck by the vehicle, the man reportedly declined medical assistance. The driver of the vehicle involved in the collision then transported the man back to his apartment on Jerome Avenue. Following his return, the man purportedly left the apartment a second time to walk to the El Ranchito supermarket before returning to the Jerome Avenue residence.
Detectives have successfully identified and located both the vehicle and the adult female driver allegedly involved in the incident. Law enforcement officials noted that the driver has been cooperative throughout the process. The vehicle has been towed as part of the ongoing investigation, though no arrests have been made at this time.
The Will County Coroner Office pronounced the man dead at the apartment on September 9, 2026. Officials confirmed that both the official identification of the victim and the final determination regarding the manner of death will be released by the Will County Coroner Office as the investigation continues.
