Joliet, IL – Drivers traveling Interstate 80 through the Joliet area should prepare for significant overnight traffic disruptions this weekend, including lane closures and temporary traffic stoppages lasting up to 15 minutes as construction crews install new overhead signs.
According to the Illinois Department of Transportation and the Joliet Police Department , the restrictions begin Saturday, October 24, at 8 p.m. and continue until noon Sunday, October 25 , affecting both directions of I 80 in Will County, southwest of Chicago.
I 80 Reduced to One Lane in Both Directions Construction crews will restrict traffic along separate stretches of eastbound and westbound Interstate 80.
The scheduled restrictions include:
Eastbound I 80: Only one lane will remain open between Houbolt Road and Wheeler Avenue. Westbound I 80: Only one lane will remain open between Richards Street and Larkin Avenue. Drivers should anticipate slower traffic and potential backups approaching the construction zones.
The work is part of the ongoing I 80 improvement project through the Joliet corridor.
Traffic Will Be Stopped for Up to 15 Minutes The most significant disruptions are expected during the early morning hours Sunday.
Between 1 a.m. and 7 a.m., traffic will be stopped for up to 15 minutes at a time , alternating between eastbound and westbound I 80.
These temporary stoppages will allow construction crews to safely install new overhead highway signs.
Motorists traveling through the area during those hours could encounter additional delays as traffic resumes following each stoppage.
When Will I 80 Fully Reopen? IDOT expects all lanes to reopen by noon Sunday, October 25 , weather permitting.
The Joliet Police Department warned that local traffic throughout the surrounding area will likely be affected by the overnight construction activity.
Drivers are encouraged to allow extra travel time, monitor traffic conditions and consider alternate routes when possible.
Motorists traveling between Joliet and surrounding Will County communities should remain alert for changing traffic patterns and construction personnel.
The scheduled work remains weather dependent, meaning the timeline could change if conditions prevent crews from completing the installation.
