JOLIET — The Will County Coroner’s Office is turning to advanced forensic DNA testing to help identify a cold case as cold as they come.
It was 25 years ago this month, in July 1997, when human remains were discovered in the rubble of the former Joliet Greeting Card Company. The facility, which had been demolished, held a grim secret that has remained unsolved for two and a half decades.
The Will County Coroner’s Office announced this week that they have enlisted the help of Othram Inc., a laboratory specializing in forensic genealogy and advanced DNA testing, to attempt to identify the individual.
Investigators hope that modern technology will finally provide answers for a family that has been searching for their loved one for many years, or perhaps finally reveal who this person was and how they ended up in the building's remains.
