Itasca, IL – A 37 year old DuPage County man faces up to 50 years in prison after being found guilty of a violent home invasion involving an AR 15 rifle in suburban Itasca, northwest of Chicago.
According to DuPage County State's Attorney Robert Berlin, Sean Brutto, formerly of the 300 block of Prairie Circle in Itasca, was convicted Thursday, Nov. 5, of four counts of home invasion, all Class X felonies, and one count of aggravated discharge of a firearm into an occupied building.
The verdict followed a three day bench trial that concluded Oct. 21, 2026, before Judge Mia McPherson.
AR 15 Fired Into Occupied Home The incident occurred Jan. 19, 2024, around 9:17 a.m., when Itasca police responded to reports of an armed man attempting to enter homes in the 800 block of Willow Court.
Investigators determined Brutto fired multiple shots in the neighborhood before shooting through a home's rear sliding glass door.
The bullet shattered the glass and struck a refrigerator.
Prosecutors said a homeowner encountered Brutto carrying the AR 15 in a second floor hallway. A struggle followed, during which the homeowner managed to disarm him.
Brutto subsequently regained possession of the rifle and fled.
Police later recovered the loaded weapon, additional ammunition and a magazine containing 25 rounds.
No injuries were reported.
Sentencing Could Bring Decades in Prison Berlin condemned the violence, emphasizing that residents deserve to feel safe inside their homes.
"Everyone has the right to feel safe in their own home," Berlin said.
Brutto has remained in custody at the DuPage County Jail since January 2024, after a judge denied his pretrial release.
He faces between 26 and 50 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections at sentencing.
His next court appearance is scheduled for Wednesday, Dec. 16, 2026, for the return of the presentence report.
