Homewood, IL – Residents in Chicago's south suburbs may notice more drones flying overhead as Amazon expands its Prime Air delivery service, bringing aerial package deliveries to communities including Homewood in Cook County.
According to the Village of Homewood, Amazon has launched its drone delivery service in the southern suburbs, and Homewood falls within the company's delivery radius.
The announcement comes as local officials anticipate questions about noise, safety, privacy and how the aircraft operate over residential neighborhoods.
Village officials explained that commercial drone operations are regulated by the Federal Aviation Administration, with additional restrictions established under Illinois law.
As a result, Homewood cannot independently prohibit drones from flying over the community, establish local flight restrictions or regulate aircraft noise while drones are airborne.
Amazon's delivery drones operate differently from traditional delivery vehicles.
Rather than landing in residential yards, the aircraft hover above designated delivery locations and lower or release packages.
The drones can transport eligible packages weighing up to five pounds and no larger than a shoebox, according to the village.
The aircraft also use onboard cameras and sensors to navigate, identify obstacles and operate safely.
Amazon states that its drones are not used for residential surveillance.
The arrival of the service could mean more frequent drone activity above Homewood and surrounding south suburban neighborhoods as aerial deliveries become more common.
Residents with questions about deliveries, aircraft noise or potential property damage are encouraged to contact Amazon directly.
