HOMER, IL — Firefighters serving communities in Champaign County and surrounding areas are getting a major communication upgrade following the announcement of a $176,522 federal grant aimed at improving emergency response and coordination between departments.
According to the Homer Fire Protection District , the district and Sidney Fire Protection District have jointly received a regional Assistance to Firefighters Grant AFG to purchase new dual band portable radios.
The funding will help firefighters communicate more effectively during emergencies, particularly when multiple departments respond to the same incident or crews operate across jurisdictional boundaries.
One of the most significant improvements will be the ability to communicate directly with both Champaign County and Vermilion County dispatch centers.
Currently, emergency responders may encounter communication challenges when different agencies operate on separate radio systems. The new equipment is intended to reduce those barriers and improve coordination during fires, crashes and other emergencies requiring assistance from neighboring departments.
The districts emphasized that interoperability, or the ability of different communication systems to work together, is especially important during regional emergencies involving firefighters, emergency medical personnel and law enforcement agencies.
The grant comes through the Federal Emergency Management Agency's Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program, which supports fire departments seeking equipment and resources to improve emergency response capabilities.
Officials described the investment as more than a routine equipment replacement, highlighting its potential to improve firefighter safety and protect residents throughout the region.
The departments also expressed appreciation to FEMA for supporting the project.
While the announcement confirms the grant award, officials did not specify when the radios will be purchased, distributed or placed into service.
For residents in Homer, Sidney and neighboring communities, the investment represents another step toward improving regional emergency preparedness and ensuring first responders can communicate when seconds matter.
