Gilberts, IL – A Kane County firefighter and U.S. Marine veteran has died following a medical emergency during a scheduled training exercise, leaving fellow firefighters and members of the suburban Chicago emergency services community mourning his loss.
According to an official statement released Sunday, October 25, by the Rutland Dundee Fire Protection District , Firefighter Greg Witt died following a medical emergency that occurred during a scheduled training exercise Wednesday, October 21.
Witt had served with the fire protection district since January 2019. Before his firefighting career, he served in the United States Marine Corps.
The district, which serves communities in the northwest suburban Chicago area, announced his death with profound sadness and recognized his dedication to public service.
“Greg was a member of our family,” Fire Chief Christopher Reedy said in the statement. “He served his country as a Marine and served this community as a firefighter, and he did both with honor.”
Reedy added that the department's thoughts remain with Witt's family and the firefighters who worked alongside him.
