Springfield, IL – The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency issued a formal notification on August 31, 2026, regarding the presence of PFAS compounds detected in groundwater within the Galesburg Community Water System and its six associated satellite systems.
According to the Illinois EPA, the discovery has prompted state officials to reach out to the affected community to provide guidance on mitigating potential exposure. Residents currently served by these water systems are being encouraged to take steps to reduce their contact with the compounds. Additionally, the agency advised that private well owners in the region should have their water tested to ensure safety.
