Evanston, IL – Families across Evanston and the northern Chicago suburbs can get a behind the scenes look at local emergency services Saturday when the Evanston Fire Department hosts its annual open house.
According to the Evanston Fire Department, the free, family friendly event will run from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Fire Department Headquarters, 909 Lake St., in Evanston, Cook County.
The department said the open house is designed to give residents a closer look at the work performed by firefighters and other first responders while also providing fire prevention and safety education.
Visitors will have opportunities to meet Evanston first responders and observe live fire and safety demonstrations during the four hour event. Promotional materials for the open house show firefighters conducting rescue demonstrations and controlled fire extinguisher training.
The event also gives children and adults an opportunity to learn more about emergency response equipment, firefighter training and steps families can take to reduce fire risks at home.
Food and refreshments will also be available during the open house, according to the department.
Fire department open houses offer residents a chance to interact directly with emergency personnel outside of an active emergency while learning how crews prepare for fires, rescues and other calls throughout the community.
The Evanston Fire Department described Saturday's event as an opportunity for residents to "get to know Evanston's first responders" while taking part in educational activities and demonstrations.
The event comes as communities prepare for fall and cooler weather, when fire departments often emphasize household safety, working smoke alarms and safe heating practices.
Residents planning to attend can head to the department's Lake Street headquarters anytime between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. Saturday.
