Darien, IL – A Downers Grove man accused of threatening to shoot a police officer following a DUI arrest in Darien has been ordered held in custody, as prosecutors reveal he was already facing similar charges involving another officer.
According to the DuPage County State's Attorney's Office, Ron McClain, 47, appeared in court Sunday, Oct. 25, where Judge Anthony Coco granted prosecutors' request to detain him before trial. In a separate proceeding Wednesday, Oct. 28, the court also granted a petition to revoke his pretrial release in an earlier case.
DUI Arrest Leads to Alleged Threat Against Officer The latest allegations stem from an Oct. 24 traffic stop around 7:30 p.m. near Cass Avenue and 75th Street in Darien, a DuPage County suburb southwest of Chicago.
Prosecutors allege an officer observed McClain driving erratically without wearing a seat belt. During the stop, the officer reportedly noticed bloodshot, glassy eyes and an odor of alcohol.
Authorities allege McClain registered a 0.23 on a preliminary breath test, nearly three times Illinois' legal driving limit of 0.08.
While at the police station , McClain allegedly told an officer, "I wish I catch you out on the street. I'm going to shoot you."
Previous Police Threat Case Raises Concerns Prosecutors said McClain was already on pretrial release following a November 2023 DUI related incident in Westmont.
In that case, he allegedly threatened an officer multiple times, including statements about obtaining a gun.
McClain faces a felony charge of threatening a public official in the latest case, along with misdemeanor and petty offenses, including DUI, driving while license revoked and obstructing a police officer.
State's Attorney Robert Berlin emphasized that threats against public officials would not be tolerated.
McClain's next court appearance is scheduled for Nov. 4 before Judge Mackay.
All charges are allegations. McClain is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
