Danville, IL – A 16 year old was arrested Tuesday afternoon after allegedly fleeing a Danville police officer on foot and throwing a loaded firearm during the encounter, authorities said.
According to the Danville Police Department , a Street Crimes Unit officer spotted the juvenile around 4:51 p.m. Tuesday in the area of Main and State streets.
Police said the officer knew the teen had previous charges stemming from allegedly fleeing on foot during an earlier traffic stop.
When the officer attempted to make contact Tuesday, the juvenile allegedly ran again, prompting a brief foot pursuit through the downtown Danville area.
The teen eventually was located near Logan Avenue and taken into custody, according to police. During the arrest, the officer reported seeing the juvenile allegedly throw a loaded firearm.
Police said the 16 year old was subsequently arrested and booked on charges of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and obstructing or resisting a peace officer.
During the investigation, officers also learned the juvenile was on probation following an earlier arrest in which authorities said he had been in possession of a firearm.
Because the person arrested is a juvenile, police did not release his name.
Authorities did not provide additional details about the firearm, including its make or caliber, or say whether any shots had been fired during Tuesday’s incident. No injuries were reported in the department’s announcement.
The charges are allegations. The juvenile is presumed innocent unless proven guilty through the applicable court process.
The arrest occurred in Danville, the Vermilion County seat in eastern Illinois.
