Chicago, Illinois – Scattered showers and embedded thunderstorms are impacting the region this morning, with the highest coverage concentrated north of I 80. Residents and commuters should prepare for localized downpours, lightning strikes, and slowed driving conditions through 12 p.m.
According to the National Weather Service, storms are moving east northeast at approximately 40 mph. For the latest movement and alerts, visit https://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?lat=41.8781&lon= 87.6298 .
If you hear thunder, you are close enough to be struck by lightning; seek shelter indoors or in a hard metal topped vehicle immediately. Drivers on I 80, I 90, and other regional expressways should maintain extra following distance due to reduced visibility and potential standing water.
The storm activity is expected to maximize its intensity during the mid morning hours before showing signs of diminishing by midday. Areas north of the I 80 corridor are currently experiencing the heaviest impact, consistent with the NWS coverage map.
Stay vigilant for potential ponding on roads and low lying intersections. Monitor local weather channels as the storm cells move through the metro area.
