Chicago, IL – Illinois residents can begin shopping for 2027 health insurance coverage Sunday, Nov. 1, as the state's official marketplace opens enrollment amid federal changes that could affect eligibility and financial assistance for some households.
According to Get Covered Illinois, the annual open enrollment period runs from Nov. 1 through Jan. 15, 2027, allowing residents to enroll in, renew or change health insurance plans through the state's Affordable Care Act marketplace.
This year's enrollment comes as federal changes under H.R. 1 affect certain Medicaid and marketplace eligibility rules.
More than 9,000 lawfully present immigrants lost Medicaid coverage in October, according to state officials. The marketplace has established a special enrollment period to help affected individuals avoid coverage gaps, although access to premium tax credits for this group ends Jan. 1.
Important Deadlines for Illinois Residents Residents should pay close attention to two enrollment deadlines:
Dec. 15, 2026: Enroll by this date for coverage beginning Jan. 1, 2027. Jan. 15, 2027: Final open enrollment deadline, with coverage beginning Feb. 1. State officials are also encouraging returning customers to compare plans rather than automatically renewing existing coverage.
Last year, Illinois residents who shopped and compared available plans saved an average of $150 per month on premiums, according to the marketplace.
