Kankakee, IL – Illinois drivers traveling along Interstate 57 and other major highways face heightened deer related collision concerns this Halloween weekend as the state enters November, one of the most active periods for white tailed deer movement.
According to guidance from wildlife and transportation authorities, the annual deer mating season, commonly called the rut, increases the likelihood of deer crossing roads unexpectedly, particularly during early morning and evening hours.
The seasonal danger extends across Illinois, including the Chicago suburbs, Kankakee County, Champaign and rural communities where highways pass through wooded areas and agricultural land.
As November begins Sunday, motorists traveling along I 57, I 55, I 80 and other heavily traveled corridors should remain especially attentive.
During the rut, male deer often travel greater distances searching for mates, making their movements less predictable. Deer may suddenly enter roadways, even in areas where drivers do not normally encounter wildlife.
The seasonal shift also coincides with shorter daylight hours, increasing the chances that commuters will travel during periods of heightened deer activity.
Authorities generally recommend reducing speed in areas with limited visibility, scanning both shoulders and using high beams when appropriate and when no other vehicles are approaching.
Drivers should also remember that deer frequently travel in groups. Seeing one animal cross the roadway may indicate others are nearby.
Motorists who encounter a deer directly ahead should brake firmly while maintaining control of their vehicle rather than swerving into another lane or off the roadway.
The transition to standard time Sunday, Nov. 1, will also change evening light conditions for commuters.
With deer movement expected to remain an important roadway safety concern throughout November, Illinois drivers are encouraged to stay alert, particularly during dawn and dusk travel.
