Chicago, IL – A 25 year old Chicago man is facing a felony gun charge after an encounter with law enforcement in the River North neighborhood on September 14. Terrance Gallaway Johnson was taken into custody by the Cook County Sheriff 's Community Safety Team during an investigation into loitering.
According to the Cook County Sheriff 's Office, officers were patrolling the parking lot of the vacant former Hard Rock Cafe on Ontario Street at approximately 4:30 p.m. when they observed three individuals. Upon approaching the group, officers reportedly saw Gallaway Johnson holding a cannabis cigar.
Authorities initially detained the man for illegal possession of cannabis before conducting a search. During the subsequent search of his person and property, officers allegedly discovered a loaded firearm inside Gallaway Johnson's backpack.
Further investigation revealed that the man did not possess a valid Firearm Owner's Identification FOID card or a concealed carry license, leading to his arrest on the scene. Following the incident, the Cook County State's Attorney's Office filed a formal charge of aggravated unlawful possession of a weapon against Gallaway Johnson.
The suspect appeared at the George N. Leighton Criminal Courthouse on September 15 for an initial hearing, where he was subsequently ordered to be released from custody.
The Cook County Sheriff's Office emphasized that all individuals charged with crimes are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. The investigation into the circumstances of the stop and the subsequent weapons charge remains a matter for the court system.
Further details regarding the status of the case were not immediately available as the legal process continues.
