CHICAGO, IL — Chicago is heading toward November with a stretch of mild autumn weather, as sunshine and afternoon temperatures in the upper 60s dominate the forecast through the coming weekend. The warmer conditions arrive just ahead of NOAA's Oct. 26–Nov. 1 extended outlook, raising the possibility that comfortable fall temperatures could continue into the beginning of November.
According to NOAA's Climate Prediction Center, the eight to 14 day outlook issued Oct. 18 covers Monday, Oct. 26, through Sunday, Nov. 1. The outlook assesses whether average temperatures and total precipitation are more likely to finish above, near or below normal. Illinois specific probabilities from the corresponding temperature and precipitation maps have not yet been verified for this report.
Chicago Approaches 70 Degrees Before November The National Weather Service forecast for Chicago shows a remarkably consistent stretch of afternoon temperatures, with highs generally remaining between 66 and 69 degrees through Sunday, Oct. 25.
Monday, Oct. 19, is expected to bring sunshine and a high near 66 degrees. Southwest winds around 5 mph will shift easterly during the afternoon.
Tuesday brings another sunny day, with temperatures again reaching approximately 66 degrees. Wednesday and Thursday are forecast to climb slightly higher, with highs near 67 degrees.
Friday remains sunny with a high around 67 degrees, followed by mostly sunny conditions Saturday and a high near 68.
By Sunday, temperatures could reach approximately 69 degrees, bringing Chicago close to the 70 degree mark as the final week of October approaches.
Mild Nights Offer a Break From Typical Autumn Chill The overnight forecast also suggests relatively comfortable conditions for this time of year.
Monday night's low is expected near 51 degrees, followed by 50 Tuesday night and 53 Wednesday night.
Thursday night could remain around 55 degrees, while Friday night is expected to dip to approximately 53.
Saturday night brings another mild low near 56 degrees.
At Chicago Midway International Airport, the temperature was 49 degrees early Monday, with fair skies and southwest winds around 8 mph.
For residents commuting, walking along the lakefront or planning outdoor activities, the forecast offers several days without significant precipitation in the supplied daily outlook.
However, lakefront conditions can differ from inland neighborhoods when winds shift off Lake Michigan, particularly during the afternoon.
Will Illinois Stay Mild Into November? The larger question is whether Chicago's mild pattern will continue beyond Sunday, Oct. 25.
The immediate forecast supports several consecutive days in the upper 60s, but it does not establish daily temperatures during the Oct. 26–Nov. 1 outlook period.
Northern Illinois also experiences different autumn conditions from central and southern portions of the state. Chicago's proximity to Lake Michigan adds another influence that can affect local temperatures.
The CPC's extended temperature map is needed to establish whether above normal warmth is favored across Illinois and whether the signal differs between Chicago, Rockford, Peoria and communities farther south.
Its separate precipitation outlook will help determine whether the state favors wetter, drier or near normal conditions as November begins.
For now, Chicago residents can expect a mild and predominantly sunny week, with temperatures approaching 70 degrees by Sunday.
Updated forecasts will provide a clearer picture of whether that warmth continues into November or gives way to a more typical late autumn pattern.
Would you welcome more 60 degree afternoons in Chicago this November, or are you ready for colder fall weather?
