Chicago, IL – Three words appearing in a winter weather warning could signal a storm far more dangerous than the snow, ice and freezing temperatures Illinois residents experience every year. During the 2026 27 winter season, those words could carry an urgent message from Chicago and Rockford to Peoria, Springfield and southern Illinois.
According to NOAA's Weather Prediction Center, the National Weather Service is expanding the use of "Particularly Dangerous Situation," or PDS, wording in select Blizzard Warnings and Ice Storm Warnings this winter.
The wording is intended for rare, exceptionally dangerous storms that could threaten lives, transportation and critical infrastructure.
What Are the Three Words Illinois Residents Should Know?
"Particularly Dangerous Situation" highlights an extraordinary threat within an existing winter weather warning.
A Blizzard Warning indicates strong winds and severely reduced visibility from falling or blowing snow. Adding PDS wording would emphasize unusually dangerous conditions.
In an Ice Storm Warning, the wording could highlight extreme threats from damaging ice accumulation.
Why Could This Matter Across Illinois?
Illinois faces several distinct winter hazards.
Chicago, Waukegan and other northeastern communities can experience heavy snow and strong winds near Lake Michigan.
Rockford, DeKalb, Bloomington and Peoria can face dangerous blowing snow, particularly across open stretches of highway.
Springfield, Champaign, Decatur and southern Illinois may also experience disruptive freezing rain and ice storms.
During an extreme event, Interstate 55 between Chicago and Springfield, Interstate 57 through central and southern Illinois, Interstate 80 across northern Illinois and Interstate 90 near Chicago and Rockford could experience serious travel disruptions.
Heavy ice accumulation can also bring down trees and power lines, potentially leaving homes without electricity or reliable heating.
These are possible impacts, not predictions of an approaching storm.
Is PDS a New Winter Weather Warning?
No. PDS is additional wording within certain existing Blizzard Warnings and Ice Storm Warnings, not a separate warning category.
Most Illinois winter storms will not receive the designation.
What Should Illinois Residents Do?
If PDS wording appears, residents should avoid unnecessary travel, follow emergency instructions and prepare for potentially prolonged disruptions.
The expanded terminology does not mean a catastrophic winter storm is currently forecast for Illinois.
