Chicago, IL – Halloween weekend across northern Illinois could begin with scattered showers and cooler temperatures as a cold front moves through the region, although forecasters say conditions may improve before Saturday evening's trick or treating activities.
According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, above normal temperatures will continue Wednesday, October 28, before a cold front brings the first opportunity for showers late Wednesday night into Thursday.
Wednesday afternoon highs are expected to reach 72 to 76 degrees across the region, providing another unusually warm late October day.
Thursday, October 29, will bring temperatures ranging from 66 to 75 degrees, with a chance of scattered showers as the front moves through.
The cooling trend becomes more noticeable Friday, October 30, when highs are expected to range from 59 to 70 degrees.
Forecasters indicate the coolest conditions will generally occur north of Interstate 80, while Chicago and areas near Lake Michigan could experience somewhat warmer overnight temperatures.
Additional rain chances are expected Friday night into Saturday, October 31, potentially affecting Halloween preparations and outdoor events.
Halloween afternoon temperatures are forecast to reach 59 to 67 degrees , with scattered showers possible during portions of the day.
However, the National Weather Service says rainfall may diminish in time for outdoor Halloween evening activities.
That could provide a welcome break for families planning neighborhood trick or treating, costume parties and other seasonal events.
Saturday evening temperatures are expected to cool toward overnight lows ranging from 47 to 53 degrees.
Residents across Chicago, Joliet, Aurora, Naperville and surrounding northern Illinois communities should prepare for changing conditions throughout the weekend.
While showers are possible, forecasters emphasize that the late week rainfall is not expected to become a complete washout.
Families should monitor updated local forecasts as Halloween approaches, particularly for changes in the timing of Saturday's showers.
