Chicago, IL – Waves of rain will continue across the Chicago area through Thursday night, with periods of heavy rainfall capable of producing localized flooding.
According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, the greatest rainfall amounts are expected near and north of Interstate 80, where totals of 1 to 3 inches are forecast. Rain will be mainly near and north of I 80 tonight before the threat for locally heavy rainfall continues Thursday.
Forecasters said the repeated rain could cause flooding in low lying and poor drainage areas. River and stream levels are also expected to rise, with impacts potentially continuing into next week.
Temperatures tonight are forecast to remain mild, with lows ranging from 64 to 69 degrees. Thursday highs are expected to range from 70 to 83 degrees before noticeably cooler air moves into the region Thursday night, sending lows into the 50s.
Some showers may linger Friday morning south of I 80, where the Weather Service shows a 20% to 40% chance of precipitation. Otherwise, conditions will begin drying out. Friday highs are forecast from 63 to 70 degrees, with overnight lows ranging from 41 to 50.
The weekend is expected to turn seasonably cool and dry. Saturday highs are forecast between 62 and 70 degrees, followed by readings of 67 to 73 Sunday. Overnight temperatures will generally fall into the 40s and lower 50s, with the warmest readings near Lake Michigan and in Chicago.
People along rivers and streams should continue monitoring forecasts as rainfall moves through Thursday night, particularly near and north of I 80 where the highest totals are expected.
