CHAMPAIGN, IL — Frost covered lawns and biting November air are giving central Illinois an early taste of winter. Yet temperatures could climb nearly 40 degrees by Tuesday before another cooldown arrives.
A widespread hard freeze has threatened sensitive vegetation across central Illinois, even as sunshine and warmer afternoons return.
According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, a hazardous weather outlook issued Friday afternoon highlighted widespread hard freeze conditions for the region.
The bulletin warned that lingering sensitive vegetation could be killed if left exposed.
Early Saturday observations at the University of Illinois Willard Airport showed temperatures near 28 degrees, with a wind chill around 22 degrees.
Hard Freeze Raises Concerns Across Central Illinois The NWS outlook covers Champaign, Urbana, Springfield, Decatur, Bloomington and numerous surrounding communities.
Hard freezes can damage exposed flowers, garden plants and other vegetation that has survived earlier autumn cold.
Residents should inspect vulnerable plants and protect any remaining sensitive vegetation before additional cold nights.
Outdoor faucets, hoses and exposed plumbing also deserve attention as freezing temperatures become more common.
Saturday afternoon brings improvement, with temperatures reaching approximately 52 degrees under increasing clouds.
However, temperatures fall toward 31 degrees Saturday night, creating another opportunity for frost and freezing conditions.
Temperatures Surge Toward 67 Degrees Tuesday Sunday brings mostly sunny skies and temperatures climbing toward 61 degrees.
Monday continues the warming trend, with sunshine and highs around 64 degrees.
Tuesday delivers the week's warmest weather, with temperatures reaching approximately 67 degrees.
That's a remarkable 39 degree increase from Saturday morning's observed temperature.
The milder conditions should provide a welcome opportunity for leaf cleanup, outdoor maintenance and early holiday preparations.
Travelers using Interstate 57, Interstate 72 and Interstate 74 should generally encounter favorable weather through Tuesday.
No significant rain, snow or ice is indicated during this stretch.
Another Cooldown Arrives Later This Week Veterans Day remains pleasant, with mostly sunny skies and temperatures around 60 degrees.
However, Thursday brings cooler air, with afternoon highs dropping toward 52 degrees.
Thursday night temperatures could fall near 33 degrees, bringing another potential frost concern.
Friday remains cooler, with highs around 49 degrees.
The current outlook does not indicate a tornado threat or significant winter storm for Champaign.
Looking toward Thanksgiving, colder weather remains a seasonal consideration, although specific snowfall threats cannot yet be established.
