CHAMPAIGN The Natural Resources Conservation Service NRCS is encouraging Illinois farmers to “keep the stubble” on their harvested crop fields and skip fall tillage this year as part of “No Till November.”
NRCS State Conservationist Ivan Dozier says “No Till November” is a nationwide effort to encourage farmers to keep soil covered and protected throughout the winter months. By leaving corn stalks and other crop residues on the field surface, farmers can protect the soil from erosion caused by wind and water, improve soil health, and keep nutrients where they belong—in the field.
“Tilling soil in the fall can destroy soil structure and leave it vulnerable to erosion,” said Dozier. “No Till November is a great time to experiment with leaving that residue on top of the soil and seeing the benefits firsthand.”
