Champaign, IL – A 16 year old remains hospitalized after being shot in the leg Monday afternoon in Champaign, as police search for information about whoever opened fire and fled before officers arrived.
According to the Champaign Police Department , officers were dispatched to the 1100 block of North Third Street at approximately 1:20 p.m. Monday, Sept. 28, 2026, following a report of a shooting with injuries.
Officers arrived and found the teenage victim suffering from what police described as a potentially life threatening gunshot wound to the leg. Police personnel immediately provided medical aid with assistance from the Champaign Fire Department until the teen could be transported to an area hospital.
Police said the victim remained hospitalized in stable condition following treatment.
The initial investigation indicates one or more suspects allegedly fired weapons in the area, striking the teen before fleeing prior to officers’ arrival.
Officers and detectives remained in the neighborhood Monday conducting a canvass for potential witnesses, physical evidence and surveillance video that could help investigators determine what happened and identify those involved.
No arrests had been announced in the city’s initial update.

Crime Stoppers says it offers a $2,500 cash reward for tips leading to an arrest in a felony crime involving a firearm.
