Champaign, IL – Two juveniles were arrested Monday after a 16 year old was shot in Champaign, with police saying investigators also recovered three unlawfully possessed firearms during the investigation.
According to the Champaign Police Department , officers responded at approximately 1:20 p.m. Monday to a report of a shooting with injuries. Officers found a 16 year old victim suffering from what was initially considered a potentially life threatening gunshot wound to the leg.
Police and Champaign Fire Department personnel provided medical aid before the teenager was transported to an area hospital. Authorities said Tuesday that the victim remained hospitalized in stable condition.
Investigators allege multiple suspects fired weapons in the area and that the 16 year old was struck by the gunfire.
At approximately 7 p.m. Monday, police arrested a 14 year old and a 17 year old, both from Champaign, on initial charges that included aggravated battery with a firearm.
Authorities said three unlawfully possessed firearms were also located inside a residence during the investigation. Because both arrested suspects are juveniles, Illinois law limits the identifying information police can release.
The charges are allegations, and the juveniles are presumed innocent unless proven guilty through the court process.
Police said investigators reviewed surveillance video, Automated License Plate Reader information and evidence collected from the scene. Investigators also identified property damage in the immediate area.
The investigation remains active despite the arrests. Champaign Police are asking anyone with additional information to call 217 351 4545. Anonymous tips may also be submitted to Crime Stoppers at 217 373 8477, through 373tips.com or using the P3 Tips mobile app.
