Champaign, IL – Automated license plate reader technology helped Champaign police locate a reported stolen vehicle Saturday afternoon, leading to a crash, four juvenile arrests and the recovery of three unlawfully possessed firearms.
According to the Champaign Police Department , officers used automated license plate reader technology, similar to systems operated by Flock Safety, to locate a vehicle reported stolen by the Champaign County Sheriff 's Office.
The vehicle was detected near Marketview Drive and Anthony Drive at approximately 3:53 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 7.
As officers responded to the area, the stolen vehicle was involved in a crash along East Anthony Drive. Multiple occupants fled on foot, triggering a coordinated search of nearby commercial properties.
A second vehicle was damaged in the collision, although police confirmed no injuries were reported.
The incident highlights how automated license plate recognition technology can assist police in locating vehicles connected to criminal investigations.
These camera systems capture license plate information and allow law enforcement to identify vehicles of interest, potentially helping officers locate them without relying solely on traditional patrol methods.
In this case, the technology helped officers locate the stolen vehicle before the subsequent crash and arrests.
Additional personnel from the Champaign County Sheriff's Office, Illinois State Police, University of Illinois Police Department and Urbana Police Department assisted with the response.
Officers ultimately arrested four juveniles and recovered three unlawfully possessed firearms.
A fifth person who fled the vehicle was not located, and police say the investigation remains ongoing.
Because the individuals arrested are juveniles, additional identifying information is protected under Illinois law.
Anyone with information about the fifth person's whereabouts is encouraged to contact Champaign police at 217 351 4545.
Anonymous tips can also be submitted through Crime Stoppers at 217 373 8477 or 373tips.com.
The incident demonstrates the role license plate reader technology played in locating the stolen vehicle, while authorities continue investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash and firearms recovery.
