Beach Park, IL – A Lake County man has been arrested following an eight month investigation into an incident in which an armed individual allegedly fled sheriff's deputies and discarded a loaded handgun in a residential neighborhood.
According to the Lake County Sheriff 's Office, the investigation began February 16, 2026, around 7:05 a.m., when deputies responded to Beach Road and Loyola Avenue in Beach Park after receiving a report of a suspicious person yelling into a cellphone while standing in the roadway.
When deputies arrived, the individual allegedly fled on foot and threw a loaded handgun into the yard of a nearby residence.
Deputies and a K9 unit searched the surrounding area but were unable to locate the individual. However, investigators recovered a cellphone believed to have been dropped during the escape.
That cellphone became a key piece of evidence in the months long investigation.
Sheriff's detectives obtained a search warrant for the device and worked with the Lake County State's Attorney's Office Cyber Lab to extract and analyze its contents.
Investigators said evidence from the phone, combined with fingerprints recovered from the handgun, helped identify 35 year old Ricardo Perez of Beach Park as the suspect.
Perez was taken into custody without incident at his residence Wednesday, October 21.
The Lake County State's Attorney's Office approved five felony charges, including armed habitual criminal, a Class X felony; unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon, a Class 2 felony; and three counts of aggravated unlawful possession of a weapon, all Class 4 felonies.
Sheriff John D. Idleburg praised detectives for continuing the investigation despite the suspect initially escaping.
"Even when someone flees the scene, the investigation doesn't stop there," Idleburg said.
Perez was scheduled to appear in court Thursday, October 22.
The charges are allegations, and Perez is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
