Pocatello, ID – A Freeze Warning has been issued for portions of southern and eastern Idaho as temperatures are expected to fall below freezing early Tuesday morning, potentially reaching 29 degrees and threatening crops, gardens and exposed outdoor plumbing.
According to the National Weather Service in Pocatello, the warning will be in effect from 4 a.m. to 9 a.m. MDT Tuesday, October 13. The alert was issued at 10:48 a.m. Monday and covers several communities across the Lower Snake River Plain, Eastern Magic Valley, Shoshone/Lava Beds and Arco/Mud Lake Desert.
Affected communities include Pocatello, Blackfoot, American Falls, Fort Hall, Shelley, Burley, Rupert, Heyburn, Shoshone, Richfield, Oakley, Carey and Mud Lake.
The warning also includes areas near Craters of the Moon National Monument and the Idaho National Laboratory.
Temperatures as low as 29 degrees are expected in portions of the warning area, creating conditions that could damage or kill sensitive crops, flowers and other vulnerable vegetation.
The National Weather Service cautions that unprotected outdoor plumbing could also sustain damage if temperatures drop below freezing.
However, forecasters noted that extensive cloud cover may limit how long temperatures remain below freezing, potentially making the coldest conditions relatively short lived.
Despite that possibility, residents are encouraged to take precautions Monday evening before the early Tuesday temperature drop.
Gardeners should cover tender plants or move vulnerable potted vegetation indoors. Homeowners should also consider protecting exposed outdoor water lines.
Agricultural operations throughout the affected valleys should monitor overnight temperatures closely, especially where frost sensitive crops remain in the fields.
Unlike a Freeze Watch, a Freeze Warning means freezing temperatures are expected rather than merely possible.
Residents should continue monitoring updated National Weather Service forecasts as the coldest conditions approach early Tuesday.
